I am a loyal listener of “Small Talk for Adults" and I really appreciate Joe’s insightful analysis and Bryan’s gentle storytelling style. They are in the business of adult education and focus on the essential skills needed to become a mature adult. They offer various courses, initially in-person and more recently, they have developed online voice courses.
In 2022, I read their published books, “What Do You Have Left Without Your Business Card?", “Mature Adult’s Independent Thinking Skills," and “Will You Still Have Your Job in Three Years?"
Then in July 2022, I purchased three online voice courses: “Systematic Approaches to Selling Professional Services," “Copywriting for Knowledge-Based Products," and “Manage Your Life with Company Management Thinking." The total cost was NT$16,847.

This is my first time purchasing an online voice course, which is similar to listening to a podcast, but with the added benefit of a transcript. Through this learning experience, I have come to realize that my preferred method of absorbing knowledge is through reading rather than listening (I actually don’t enjoy audiobooks).
Although I enjoy listening to podcasts, I find that I am not able to retain information as effectively through audio as I am through reading. While it’s easy to forget the content of a free podcast, it feels like a waste to forget the content of a paid course that I have listened to like a stream of water.
Despite the thoughtful addition of a transcript in the voice course, which I can review after class, I began to question the value of spending more money on an online voice course than on a book. If my preferred way of learning is through reading, then why not just buy books instead?
Moreover, after some testing, I found that listening to a 10-minute audio took me 5 minutes to read the transcript. Reading was more efficient and allowed me to take notes immediately, which made a deeper impression.
However, the decision not to publish books and to focus on developing voice courses is probably a commercial consideration for them. Perhaps there are many people who prefer listening over reading, and selling courses is more profitable than selling books. If these three courses were turned into books, I would save ten times the money.
So, are the contents of the voice courses worth it? Actually, their teaching method is to systematically organize and explain the things, experiences, and common sense that you may already know. Since I am not a service provider, the two courses “Systematic Approach to Selling Professional Services" and “Copywriting for Knowledge-Based Products" only helped me improve my understanding of self-employment. At most, they are a tool for reviewing whether self-employed people I know have adopted their strategies. I think those who can survive well in the market as self-employed people can also learn the strategies inside through practical experience without a systematic approach, while these two courses can be good learning materials for those who plan to start their own businesses in the future.
As for the course “Manage Your Life with Company Management Thinking", I actually think that the three books they published, “What Do You Have Left Without Your Business Card?", “Mature Adult’s Independent Thinking Skills", and “Will You Still Have Your Job in Three Years?", also mention similar concepts.
Spending a large sum of money to gain new knowledge about myself – that I am not suitable for the voice learning method – means that I will not purchase online voice courses in the future.
The notes for the three courses are as follows
