Unexpected Gains

Lately, I’ve been reading Indonesia Etc.: Exploring the Improbable Nation. So when my boss brought up countries that had been colonized, I was able to put what I’d just learned into use—I mentioned that Indonesia had been under Dutch colonial rule until it declared independence after World War II. The Dutch East India Company and later the Dutch government ruled Indonesia for over 340 years. Also, Indonesia is a nation of islands, with more than 17,000 islands, though 60% of its population lives on Java.

My boss then talked about how Sukarno was pro-communist, and that the United States supported the movement behind The Thirtieth of September Movementthe to overthrow him. He also mentioned that Indonesia is currently planning to relocate its capital because Jakarta is at risk of being submerged by rising sea levels. The new capital will be moved to Nusantara.

It was precisely because I realized how unfamiliar I was with Indonesia that I started reading Indonesia Etc.—and both things my boss mentioned were completely new to me. I found them so refreshing. I hope that by the time I finish reading this book, I’ll be able to draw broader connections like that too.

Another unexpected takeaway from chatting with my boss was the idea that “even on your days off, you should dress properly at home.”

Since my boss has strong ties to the United States—he travels there often and has lived there for several years—I took the opportunity to ask, “In TV shows, Americans are often shown wearing regular clothes at home. Is that actually true?”

He said yes, that’s just their custom. They stay well-dressed at home and even keep their shoes on indoors.

While I personally can’t accept the idea of wearing outdoor shoes in the house, the idea of dressing properly at home inspired me.

Those long-forgotten outfits left in my wardrobe—the ones I don’t wear outside anymore for various reasons (age, weather, etc.)—could still be worn at home. And if I don’t even wear them at home, then it’s probably time to let them go.

My boss said that after reaching a certain age, he started paying more attention to dressing well. Even if he’s not going out, he doesn’t allow himself to look sloppy at home. He said that once you get older, being unkempt feels even more disheartening.

Every time I talk with my boss, there’s always an unexpected gain.
